چکیده

Effect of algae movement, as a result of random mixing, between the surface and bottom zones of shallow, moderately deep and deep photobioreactors (incident light intensities per unit volume were 8125, 4062 and 2031~01. rnP3. s-l, respectively) on the reactor productivity was investigated. The results showed that at low cell concentrations, movement of cells between the surface and bottom zones of shallow and moderately deep reactors had no significant effect on Chlorella pyrenoidosa C-212 growth and productivity. However, as the cell concentration in the reactors increased, cell movement between the two zones resulted in increased productivity of the shallow reactor but decreased productivity of the moderately deep reactor. On the other hand, in the deep reactor, random movement of cells between the two zones resulted in decreased Chlorella growth rate regardless of the cell concentration. This may be attributed to the fact that at high cell concentration or in a deep reactor, if the cells move between the surface and bottom of the reactor, they spend too long a time in the dark part of the reactor where there is no cell growth, and endogenous respiration as well as cell death may lead to a decrease in cell concentration. When Spirulina platensis M-135 cells were cultivated in the deep reactor, even at high cell concentration, movement of cells between the surface and bottom zones of the reactor led to an increase in the reactor productivity. The reasons for the difference in the results obtained with these two strains of algae could be attributed to the difference in their light requirements since it was found that the saturation light intensity and specific decrease in cell concentration when incubated in the dark were lower for Spirulina than for Chlorella cells.

Plastic bag as horizontal photobioreactor on rocking platform driven by water power for culture of alkalihalophilic cyanobacterium

Background: Mixing in traditional algae culture system consumes intensive electricity. This should be replaced by nature force to reduce energy cost and, more importantly, to realize positive energy balance of algal biofuel production. This study aims to develop a horizontal photobioreactor, in which mixing can be provided with rocking movement driven by nature force. Results: Simple boxes were...

A Theoretical Consideration on Oxygen Production Rate in Microalgal Cultures

Because algal cells are so efficient at absorbing incoming light energy, providing more light energy to photobioreactors would simply decrease energy conversion efficiency. Furthermore, the algal biomass productivity in photobioreactor is always proportional to the total photosynthetic rate. In order to optimize the productivity of algal photobioreactors (PBRs), the oxygen production rate shoul...

Development and optimization of algal cultivation systems

This thesis describes research done on two novel algae cultivation systems. The first system was an attached algal growth system to facilitate biomass harvest with improved biomass yield. In the attached system, algal cells were grown on the surface of a material rotating between the nutrient-rich liquid phase and the carbon dioxide-rich gaseous phase. The algal cells from the attached growth s...

Adjusted Light and Dark Cycles Can Optimize Photosynthetic Efficiency in Algae Growing in Photobioreactors

Biofuels from algae are highly interesting as renewable energy sources to replace, at least partially, fossil fuels, but great research efforts are still needed to optimize growth parameters to develop competitive large-scale cultivation systems. One factor with a seminal influence on productivity is light availability. Light energy fully supports algal growth, but it leads to oxidative stress ...
